Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Situated at the start of Krasny Prospekt and commanding a stunning view from a distance, this magnificent temple has come to represent Novosibirsk.

The oldest stone church in the city is called the Cathedral named for the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky.

Constructed in 1899, it honors Emperor Alexander III, the man who founded the Trans-Siberian Railway and, consequently, the patron saint of Novonikolaevsk, the town that developed alongside it. Nicholas II contributed to the construction of the temple by giving the emperor a plot of land, personal funds for the building of an iconostasis and vestments, and two icons (which the Novosibirsk State Museum of Local History returned to the temple in 1991).

The church, already bereft of its bell tower and crosses, was attempted to be demolished in the 1930s despite its undeniable architectural value. However, since the church was thoughtfully constructed and held up well, the explosions only caused damage to the interior walls. It housed a number of businesses over the years, most notably a newsreel studio for a considerable amount of time. Naturally, the cathedral experienced internal renovations during this period and lost its painting. It wasn’t until 1989 that the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was given back to the Church and restoration work started. It now adorns our city once more. In front of the church, a monument honoring Tsarevich Alexei and Nicholas II was just built.

Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin

The Pokrovsky Church is the oldest wooden church in Novosibirsk and the only one that survived the terrible fire of 1909. The small temple is located in a quiet center, away from the bustle of the city; it is cozy and calm inside. The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God was built in 1901 and was conceived as a church-school, part of the all-Russian primary education system. Therefore, an aisle was added to its western side, in which there were school classrooms. Nearby was an orphanage "Nursery" "for the permanent care of homeless children of both sexes and for day care of young children of mothers leaving home for daily work", and in 1910. a stone two-story school was built.
The parish was always sparsely populated, poor and was involved in education and charity. And now there is a library and Sunday school here, patronage has been organized over an orphanage, over the Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics and a military hospital.

Additionally, sign language interpretation has been a regular feature of services at the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God for the past 14 years!

Moreover, this temple did not escape the fate that befell the majority of Novosibirsk temples during the 1930s; in 1939, it was shut down, stripped of its assets, including a bell tower, and given to municipal organizations. The Pokrovsky Church has been open for services again since 1994 and is officially recognized as an architectural monument since 1990. Unfortunately, the building had deteriorated to such an extent by then that it had to be essentially rebuilt in the early 2000s.

Ascension Cathedral

The main temple of Novosibirsk, the Ascension Cathedral, is undoubtedly well-known to all citizens of the city. It has seven golden domes and is inside beautifully painted and decorated. It’s practically in the middle, right next to Narymsky Square, which is a popular hangout for city dwellers. There is a monument to St. Peter and Fevronia, who are honored as patrons of marriage, not far from the temple.

And it was the very edge of the city a century ago (the temple was constructed in 1913). And the temple appeared entirely different—it was tiny and made of wood.

It was luckier than most temples at that time: it was closed only for a few years, from 1939 to April 1944. By the way, a significant amount of donations were collected by parishioners for the needs of the army in the last years of the war.
Gradually the temple was enlarged and reconstructed, the wooden walls were replaced with brick ones, the lower temple was equipped. True, during the reconstruction in the 80s, the Soviet leadership did not allow making the cathedral higher and wider, but even now it is very beautiful: in 1989, at the All-Russian review of the best architectural works, the work of the architects who reconstructed the Ascension Cathedral was awarded a 1st degree diploma and a medal of the Union of Architects of Russia.
There are many revered shrines and icons in the Ascension Cathedral, for example, two icons of the Mother of God from Mount Athos.

Trinity Vladimir Cathedral

Novosibirsk’s Trinity Vladimir Cathedral is situated outside of the city. Even though this temple’s construction was only finished in 2013, it has managed to gain recognition outside of our city.

One of the biggest churches outside of the Urals, this two-story structure rises to a height of 60 meters at the top of the cross. A thousand and a half people can fit in the church at once!

Even on holidays, there is light and space, even though a good number of people visit the church. The lower church floor is dedicated in the name of the Holy Trinity, while the upper floor is dedicated in the name of Prince Vladimir, Equal to the Apostles.

The Trinity-Vladimir Cathedral is filled with youth and children. The church offers classes on the history of the Church for adults, an extensive library, Sunday school for children ages 4 to 12, and an Orthodox gymnasium that has been in operation for more than ten years. The parish supports the Regional House of Mercy, the Scientific and Technical Complex, and City Hospital No. 11, as there are numerous clinics close to the cathedral.

The cathedral can be reached via Trinity Square’s main, broad alley. Walking in the park is a great experience: there’s a big ship-shaped playground, a volleyball court, and rides on donkeys and horses. There are a lot of flowers all around the temple in the summer. A monument honoring the unity of the Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian Slavic peoples is located not far from the cathedral.

Temple in the name of Michael the Archangel

This temple is seen by everyone who enters Novosibirsk from the south. Many still remember that in Soviet times there was a movie theater "Zarya" here. Indeed, the Church of Archangel Michael is located in the reconstructed premises of the movie theater. But few people know that the place for the temple was not chosen by chance: almost a hundred years ago, when this territory was a suburb and was called Ust-Iney, there was a temple! The history of this corner of today"s Oktyabrsky district is not quite ordinary: the temple was built already in the 20s of the last century, under the Bolsheviks, and survived the harsh 30s. Later it was closed, and in 1947 it was converted… yes, into a movie theater. But later, due to the dilapidation, he was demolished, and a new one, which, eventually, became nearby and became the temple again.

These days, the city knows the Church of Archangel Michael primarily for its bell-ringing school.

Additionally, there are tours to the region’s only Museum of Bell Ringing available to kids and their parents (by appointment only)!

The church has a Sunday school and a youth club called "Blagovest," which frequently has engaging gatherings and discussions. The parish has collaborated with two correctional colonies, among other good deeds.
