Quadrobika is a harmless hobby, a new sport or a dangerous passion?

We don’t always have time to keep up with the new terms and ideas that come into our lives so quickly. For my part, I had not heard the term "quadrobika" until recently. However, it turned out that my kids are pretty knowledgeable about this new teen movement.

Let’s investigate what it is, what threats it poses to our kids, and what advantages it may offer.

The Latin term quattuor, which means "four," and the English word aerobics, which means "aerobics," or aerobics on four limbs, are the sources of the word "quadrobika." In this game, participants dress up as animals by donning masks, gloves, and tails, walking on all fours, and pulling off various animal-themed antics.

Like many other strange activities, quadrobika was brought to us from Japan. And it started out as an odd kind of sports running—on all fours—rather than role-playing games. The creator of this "sport" went on to win competitions in it and set a world record when he ran a hundred meters in 15.71 seconds in 2008, earning a spot in the Guinness Book of Records. Even though it eventually incorporated technical elements from parkour and aerobics in addition to high speed, this activity was not recognized as a sport. The activity expanded over time and only reached Russia in 2024, by then in a more expanded form.

So who are quadrobers?

These are usually teenage girls, between the ages of 7 and 14, who dress up as animals and do tricks with joy. This might appear extremely odd to the outside world because human postures are by no means typical of animal postures.

Kids craft handcrafted masks of their favorite animals. The steps to creating a quadrobe mask are widely available online. Children dress up as animals and form interest groups to jump and climb like real animals. Running is all it takes at times, but there are also real acrobatic numbers that call for intense physical training, flexibility, and agility.

What does this give to teenagers?

First of all, there’s the never-ending hunt for "their pack." Youngsters are unified by interests and working toward a common goal. Alternatively, they demonstrate to others how unique and imaginative they are. Second, it’s about self-expression and inventiveness; quadrobe riders make their own costumes. Thirdly, it remains an athletic endeavor and a means of releasing energy. It’s also a means of decompressing and letting go of some of your feelings.

What do experts say about this?

Psychologists say that this is one of the ways to escape from reality, to separate yourself from your body and your image. Often these children feel abandoned, they lack the attention of adults, adequate communication with peers and a sense of their own worth. They think that the life of animals is simpler and more understandable, that animals are more attractive than people.
As a result, this can lead to the fact that the child, whose psyche is still very flexible, will begin to associate himself with the animal. May show aggression, even bite passers-by. Or get carried away and get injured. After all, our body is completely unsuited to walking on all fours.

The hands that come into contact with the ground and the spine from the weight that is not supported by nature are the most common injuries suffered by quad bikers.

This is particularly risky while the child is growing quickly because their spine is already under a lot of strain.

The fact that these kids stand out from the crowd poses an additional risk to them. Not only can their peculiar conduct frighten others, particularly their parents, but it can also incite self-aggression.

Numerous incidents of older teenagers attacking, beating, and pepper spraying quad bikers have already occurred.

Young people who belong to aggressive groups are particularly prone to xenophobia, and children who get carried away while playing end up being the targets of bullies.

It is evident that not every young person wearing an animal mask will charge at onlookers or attempt to pull off a third-floor cat jump. Games are frequently just games.

We all used to play role-playing games where we were foxes and bunnies at a matinee. Furthermore, there have always been more worldwide subcultures centered around reincarnation; you may recall the same role-players who, in most cases, either grow out of this or turn it into a pastime that does not interfere with daily life. The same is true for quadrobics: if a child is just looking to have some fun, let him make this mask, accompany him to a clearing in the forest, let him tumble around, or let him go hang out with his friends.

It is only important to explain that this should be done in a safe place place – where the probability of getting injured is minimal, and where they shock the least number of people with their games.
In addition, it is worth telling the child that if he wants not only to run on all fours, but also to jump and tumble like animals, then you need to develop flexibility, have good physical fitness (otherwise, instead of cat-like grace, you can get, at a minimum, a sprain). Perhaps, this will generally become a reason to sign up for dancing or gymnastics, and the need for self-expression will find a useful and safe outlet.

However, if an adolescent begins wearing a mask constantly and is unable to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate situations, this could be a warning sign and may even be an attempt to get assistance.

Reactions to quadrobika, a rapidly expanding activity that blends motorsport and cycling, have been mixed. Some people consider it to be a fun and safe pastime, but others worry about the safety of it, particularly for young people. Families should consider the advantages of enjoyment and fitness in relation to any hazards as its popularity grows, making sure that safety precautions are taken.
