Birch Grove Park: recreation for every taste

Whatever your family’s interests, Birch Grove Park is a great place to spend a day outside. The park has plenty to offer visitors of all ages, whether they’re searching for thrilling activities to keep everyone occupied or a tranquil stroll through the outdoors.

The park’s sports fields, bike trails, and playgrounds offer plenty of opportunities for adventure seekers to stay active. In the meantime, those who would rather spend a leisurely afternoon with delicious food and company will love the covered picnic spaces.

Birch Grove Park’s abundance of natural beauty and diverse attractions make it the ideal place for families to spend time together, play, and relax. Because it accommodates a wide range of interests, it’s the perfect place to go on any kind of excursion.

From the history of the park

It goes without saying that native Novosibirsk residents are aware that one of the city’s cemeteries was situated here in the first half of the 20th century, but it was abandoned and relocated to Zaeltsovsky’s land after the war. However, not many people are aware that, prior to the revolution, the children’s shelter "Yasli" had a country home outside of Novonikolaevsk, complete with a farm, greenhouse, vegetable garden, and arable land. This is where the "Eurasia" concert hall is now located.

"Birch Grove" was the name given to this area when park improvements started here in the 1960s. Opening day for the park was July 1, 1971.

The park featured a kid-friendly ice cream shop called "Airplane" in the early 1980s, and it was housed in a real Tu-104 aircraft! Even though it was featured as a landmark in Novosibirsk on one of the postcards, the sanitary service quickly had it taken down.

In the last ten years, Birch Grove Park has undergone significant modernization and upkeep. New trees were planted, flower beds were designed, and landscaping work was completed. Numerous fresh attractions are available. On Novosibirsk’s 120th anniversary in 2013, a grand and exquisite four-tier park fountain with backlighting was inaugurated. The kids are determined to dive in despite the prohibition!

Temple of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In commemoration of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Assumption, a wooden temple was erected next to the cemetery in 1925. Priest Ilya Kopylov, the rector of the church, was detained in 1937 and shot, along with fifteen other believers who were also priests and parishioners, a month later. However, the church itself endured, and up until 1944 it was the only one in the city still in operation.

"For Valiant Labor during the Great Patriotic War," priest Nikolai Syrnev, the rector of this church, was awarded a medal. Through the donations he organized, the Red Army was able to transfer more than a million rubles toward the production of aircraft for the Siberian squadron "For the Motherland" and a tank column.

However, the authorities made the decision to dissolve the Assumption Church in 1962. The church was closed in the summer of 1963 despite the objections of believers, and it was demolished in a single night. And in 1995, a new stone church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was constructed in the middle of the park, in a slightly different location, based on a one-story chess club house.

One park – four recreation areas

The park administration decided to create four zones: sports, walking, memorial, and active during the reconstruction.

Quiet recreation area

The birch grove, or forest, is the largest and most central area of the park. This is probably true as well—many city people come here in search of peace and quiet. It’s true that this forest has been blessed with many benches, paths, and alleys. Numerous elderly people can be seen strolling arm in arm or participating in stylish Nordic walking in this area. Kids ride scooters, bicycles, and gyro scooters. In the quiet of the forest, parents push strollers full of infants.

There are many different species of trees and shrubs here, including bird cherry, maple, rowan, spruce, larch, pine, dogwood, lilac, snowberry, and others, in addition to the already elderly (80–90 year old) birches.

The park is already home to a large number of nearly domesticated squirrels, mostly because city people feed them. These fluffy beauties can even jump on someone’s shoulder because they have no fear of people at all! It’s true that they regrettably didn’t want to pose for us this time. This is the site of the annual "House for the Squirrel" feeder competition.

Memorial zone

The memorial to soldiers who perished from radiation sickness (RAS) during the Great Patriotic War was erected in 1977 on the western edge of the park, behind the "Stroitel" construction site. This monument merely serves as a reminder that there were soldier graves in these locations—it makes no mention of the burial site. Here are the names of 109 soldiers who passed away in the Novosibirsk hospitals located in this area.

In the era of the Soviet Union, schoolchildren in pioneers were welcomed near this monument. The current generation is also making an effort to preserve the monument and to remember the recent past.

Acts of outdoor activities

Numerous entertainment options, mostly geared toward kids, can be found in the park’s forest area. Long alleys can be explored by renting an electric car, gyro scooter, bike, or bicycle from this location.

You can shoot in a hurry, get on a camel, or ride an almost real unicorn (or deer in the winter).

Holidays, show programs, and a dance floor are all held on two stages.

Points of Interest For people of all ages, "Birch Grove" offers a variety of carousels, a racetrack, and trampolines. In the event of inclement weather, there is a large labyrinth in a closed playroom where you can play. This place has a whole "park in the park," which is the Country Park, an amusement park for families.

One such attraction for young children and their parents is called "Safari," where animals appear to come to life when viewed with precision.

Season passes and discounts are available for rides, by the way.

Similar to a park, Kirov in "Berezovaya Roshcha" works at the city’s beloved petting zoo. There are a few more animal species and it is neater and more roomy here. There is no cost to enter the zoo.

Sports area

It can be found in the park’s northern and eastern regions. An excellent chance to play sports outside is provided by the tennis court, sports field, and horizontal bars! In the winter, an illuminated ski track is laid in the park, and an ice rink is flooded. Sports equipment is available for rent. You can also get a good workout in laser tag.

However, the U-Ra rope park is legitimately the "highlight" of Birch Grove Park! (an Slabo Park branch?).

These three routes range in height from two to ten meters, and they are all rather short but interesting. Stages in a rope park: from the easiest to the most difficult, requiring strength and agility. There are several ways to cross from one location to another, including nets, ladders, and rope and wooden bridges. The younger students are particularly fond of this ropes course.

Where to eat in the Birch Grove Park

Renting a comfortable room in the "Birch Grove" gazebo or barbecue area is an option if you’d like to have a quick picnic inside the city (from 500 rubles per hour).

If you don’t want to cook, the park has four cafes and the restaurant "Tsarsky Dvor" is very well-liked in the city of the cafe "Birch", "In Birch Grove"; both places are open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and serve delicious Caucasian cuisine along with "live" music.
