What is a cocoon swaddle?
This is the name of a unique swaddle that a baby feels secure and at ease in. The baby’s body is softly enveloped in a cocoon swaddle, which replicates the sensations the baby experienced in his mother’s womb. Compared to a regular swaddle, this one makes it much easier to swaddle a toddler. In it, the infant sleeps more soundly and does not wake up by kicking and flailing his arms and legs.
Purpose of a cocoon envelope
- In such a cocoon, the baby will feel calm and sleep better.
- It is convenient and quick to wrap a child in such a cocoon.
- The special shape of the swaddle eliminates the possibility for the child to unwrap the cocoon on his own.
- In a warm cocoon envelope, a child can be picked up from the hospital, warmed at home in cool weather, or taken out for a walk in a stroller.
Types
A cocoon diaper’s design allows it to be:
- On Velcro. The baby is very comfortable in such a soft cocoon, and unswaddling is impossible. The fasteners in this product are adjustable, so such a diaper will “adapt” to the baby’s growth. To change the diaper, the diaper is opened in the leg area, so there is no need to turn the baby completely.
- With a zipper. Ideal for low-weight and premature babies. Such a diaper gently hugs the baby’s body and does not interfere with its movements, while the baby will flinch less in it, and the baby’s sleep will be stronger and longer. Thanks to the double zipper, you can change the baby’s diaper without removing the diaper completely. The fastener is sewn in a safe way, so it cannot harm the baby.
The cocoon diaper can be used as a swaddling blanket in addition. The baby is lovingly wrapped in this large cotton blanket from the moment of birth. This type of cocoon diaper is very easy to use, and it doesn’t require any extra adult effort or skills to swaddle.
Choosing a fabric
The cocoon diaper’s construction must use only natural materials that pose no risk to the infant. These are typically cotton textiles, like chintz and flannel. For the cocoon diaper, fleece and knitted fabric work well as well.
How to sew it yourself?
Velcro
It is fairly easy for the mother to sew such a product by hand if she is proficient in sewing:
- Find a pattern for a cocoon diaper with Velcro.
- Buy fabric and thread, and if you plan to make a warm envelope, then additionally buy synthetic padding.
- Transfer the pattern to the purchased natural fabric. The length of the fabric should be 50 cm, and the width – 85 cm.
- Duplicate the lower part of the pattern to make a leg pocket.
- Sew the product and process its edges with an overlock or piping.
- If you are making a warm diaper, fold the outer fabric, inner fabric and padding polyester together, stitch the edges, leaving a small area, and then turn the diaper inside out and carefully sew up the remaining hole.
- Sew a soft Velcro fastener to the top.
- Decorate the diaper with any decor you want, such as patterns, an animal face, a picture of a car, an embroidered name or some cute applique.
Matryoshka diaper with a zipper
The following steps are involved in sewing this version of the cocoon, which is also fairly easy to do:
- Buy a piece of knitted fabric and a zipper.
- Draw a pattern for a matryoshka diaper 24 cm wide and 52 or 62 cm long.
- Cut out the back of the diaper and 2 front parts from the fabric. In addition, cut out the lining, collar and protective strip.
- Process the edges with an overlock or stitch with a zigzag.
- Glue the edges of the shelves with thread-stitched interlining in the place where the fastener will be.
- Sew the edges of the protective strip on the machine, turn the strip inside out, attach the zipper to it and stitch.
- When connecting the shelves at the bottom, attach the strip with the sewn-on zipper and make a mark.
- Separately sew the strips from the main material, then sew the strips from the lining fabric in the same way.
- Pin the main fabric and the back lining together, then stitch them together.
- Sew the collar to the neckline, leaving about 6-8 centimeters from the side cut for the zipper.
- Fold the collar in half and sew it to the diaper so that it is located between the lining and the main fabric.
- Sew the zipper to the diaper.
